The challenge

53.4% of Nigerian youth are unemployed which implies that 293.700 out of 550.000 youth in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area are unemployed. (Nigeria Bureau of Statistics 2020, Lagos Bureau of Statistics 2016).

Based on our findings during meetings with different stakeholders, we learned the following:

1. Unemployment in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area is caused by:

a. Lack of stable jobs for youth.

b. Lack of job openings by most businesses.

c. Lack of growth in sales and incomes by businesses.

d. Lack of entrepreneurial and leadership skills in business owners/managers.

e. Lack of entrepreneurial and leadership education in our primary and secondary schools.

f. Dearth of vocational and technical education in our educational system.

2. Effects of unemployment in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area are;

a. Promotes vices like uncontrolled gambling and drug addiction.

b. Demoralizing and making our youth and children irresponsible.

c. Increase in crime and gangsterism.

d. Worrying and depression among youth and children.

The project

The initiative proposes to develop an enrichment program for children within age 8 to 16 that impart skills like vegetable farming, fashion designing, shoe making, catering, théâtre art, programming or hair styling and others based on entrepreneurial practices and principles.

The program will be implemented in partnership with primary/secondary schools and enterprises through weekly training in the schools and/or online tutoring via our virtual learning platform, practical projects and apprenticeship training in workplaces.

The Vocational training will be blended with soft skills training like Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Marketing and other relevant soft skills. The Participation of each student in the program is mandatory since the program has been accepted by the education policy maker as a valuable component which may be included in their Educational Program. The curriculum will be designed by the local government education experts and experienced entrepreneurs in given field.

The Pilot phase will focus on children within age 8 to 10. Weekly skill training will be organise for them in their respective schools and on our online platform. The students are encouraged to demonstrate the skills acquired by creating products related to the lessons learnt. Students in Basic 6 will in addition to the activities above also go through 3 months apprenticeship training at assigned workplaces. The students will be given foundational certificate after completing the tasks assigned.

After The Pilot phase, we will expand the program to children within age 11 to 13 in the Junior Secondary Schools and also youth in Senior Secondary Schools.

Children in Junior Secondary Schools will undergo weekly skill training in the schools and on our online platform. They will be encouraged to create products related to the lessons learnt. Students in Basic 9 i.e. the terminal class of the Junior Secondary Schools will in addition to the activities engaged above also go through 3 months apprenticeship training at assigned workplaces and also be given Basic Certificate after completing the tasks assigned.

Youth in Senior Secondary Schools will undergo weekly skill training in their respective schools and participate in our online courses. They are also encouraged to develop group project related to lessons learnt. The best 10 group project will be invested in by parents' forum and other interested organisations. The students will conclude the program with 6 months apprenticeship training at assigned workplaces while selection and fundraising activities for the best 10 group projects take place.

The Learning Management System (i.e. the online platform) will be develop with the use of Moodle and Firebase. The lessons will be video based on our online platform. The virtual classroom in our online platform is an asynchronous-based online learning environment that delivers video courses to learners and provides collaboration and interaction using an asynchronous-based forum as the main platform to support the learners' independent study. It also provides a learning environment with learning tools, learning materials, opportunities for contextual and collaborative discussions, as well as individual learning and assessment.

  1. Awareness Campaign and Recruitment of facilitators: We will orientate parents’ forums and community development associations and trade associations on the program. We will collect applications from all recommended /reached skill facilitators, rate them according to their years of experience in teaching/practicing the skill, membership of trade association and willingness to learn.
  2. Designing of Curriculum, Training Manual and Training of facilitators: Local Government Education experts and Experienced Entrepreneurs will design the program curriculum and training manual for the facilitators. The recruits will undergo intensive training on skill facilitation, mentoring and video courses creation led by seasoned educationists and professionals.

A team of skill facilitators will be assigned to a cluster of schools; the days of training will be fixed with the assistance of school administrators. Record of each training session will be sent to the project Officers for feedbacks and the best video recording on a module will be hosted on our virtual learning platform for using it for the next training. The prototype of this virtual platform is already on https://www.gladstar.sch.ng
  4. Evaluation/Review: Observation, Survey and interview sessions will be used to evaluate the program. Financial Assessment of the books will also be conducted by Auditors.
